The story behind the century-old barn that became the Nature Centre

The barn that now houses the Fulltofta Nature Center once belonged to Kvarröd's farm, which was mentioned for the first time in writing in 1560. The farm then belonged to the Fulltofta manor. The name Kvarröd comes from the words mill and clearing. After a fire in 1894, the dwelling house, barn and stables were renovated. The house burned down in 1973, but the barn and stables were saved. After a total rebuild and extension, the Fulltofta Nature Center was inaugurated here in 2006.

Go back in time - see ruins and ancient remains

In Fulltofta there are many stones with a story to tell. Fulltofta is full of ancient fields and cultivation mounds from the Stone Age and many of them are marked on our map. Ringsjön's beaches were already popular during the Stone Age. Here there was both fish and game to catch, and the land here began to be cultivated early. For several hundred years, the area was characterized by Fulltofta estates. The estate belonged to the bishops of Lund during the Middle Ages, but was bought in 1768 by Fredrik Trolle and remained in the family's possession for over 200 years. When the estate and its tenant farms needed labour, village communities were built up with crofts, flour and sawmills. Today, most of the crofts are ruins and the remains from them can be found everywhere in the area. Vasahus is one of these and is located in the middle of a bright meadow north of the nature center. At Ravinslingan there is today a built-up svaltmill according to an older model that was used to grind flour.

See one of Skåne's oldest oaks

Many old oaks can be found in Gäddämgen where also Gäddeken, which is a 500-year-old piece. It becomes clear that there has been forest in Fulltofta since the Stone Age, but as people have cultivated the land and allowed their animals to graze here, the forest has thinned out. Trees that were allowed to remain in forest pastures, on field edges and in paddocks have been given extra growing space and today in western Fulltofta there are several preserved oaks that are really old. The oak is also the tree that gives shelter to the greatest number of insects, fungi, lichens and mosses – several of them both rare and endangered. The older and rougher the tree, the more guests who move in.

Today the forest is dense again in Fulltofta. The first plantings took place at the end of the 19th century. The old fallow and arable land was no longer used as diligently and there was a lack of forest. Subsequently, a large part of the area has been planted with spruce. The forestry is certified according to FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes). This means that the forests must be managed so that biological, cultural and social values are taken into account. Spruce forest is often replaced by deciduous forest. Parts of the forest are currently clear of logging.

Wander past the Scanian saint's spring

At the entrance south of Fulltofta Nature Center you will find St. Magnhild's spring. St. Magnhild was one of Skåne's most important local saints and at her grave it was believed that a miracle took place - the sick became well and you could get a warning about the future. Magnhild was helpful, pious and kind-hearted, and why her daughter-in-law chose to kill her in 1215 is an unsolved mystery. Likewise, that the coffin overturned on the way to the funeral and how a spring sprang up from the ground where the coffin fell.
