Vitemölla

Vitemölla recreation area is sea and meadow. Rolling waves, flowering hillsides, gnarled pines and rainforest-like deciduous forest. Keep in mind that the entire walking area is a nature reserve where, for example, you are not allowed to pitch a tent and the dog must be on a leash all year round. Here you walk on unmarked nature trails on the sand steppe, you can swim and enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Hike & walk

In Vitemölla there are unmarked smaller nature trails for hiking. Discover the semi-secret Klammersbäck Ravine in the middle area with dreamlike leaf forest, beech and maple. Forsärla and kingfishers can be found along the river. Up on the heights in western Vitemölla there is also a beautiful old pine forest with winding paths to walk on. You can also visit our outdoor museums such as Stenören's ålabod or Lindgren's länga, where we collaborate with Haväng's museum association. The SandLife conservation work has led to positive results in the coastal lands. Skåneleden passes through the area. See digital map further down och download map in pdf.

Vitemölla is located between Haväng and Kivik. From road 9, there are signs towards Vitemölla for the southern parking lot, towards Haväng for the northern one. The SkåneExpress between Kristianstad-Simrishamn stops 600 meters from the southern parking lot.

By car

Från väg 9 är det skyltat mot Vitemölla för den södra parkeringen och mot Haväng för den norra. It is not permitted tostary overnight with vans/mobile homes at the parkings in the nature reserve. Read the local signs.

By bus

SkåneExpressen 3 between Kristianstad and Simrishamn runs every day to two stops adjacent to the walking area - Vitemölla Källebacken and Ängdala. Read the timeytable for SkåneExpressen 3.  From Vitemölla Källebacken it is about 600 meters to the southern parking lot, along the asphalt road into the village. From Ängdala, you have to walk a bit along route 9, which is relatively heavily trafficked. You then take paths through grazed meadows and along a gravel road through Haväng's summer village into the recreation area.

More about Vitemölla

Hike among the mountain thyme, field sedge and unique sand steppe

On the dry beach meadows you can find the unusual sand lily, which blooms in June. On the slopes, you can also look out for tufted sandpipers, sand timothys and field sippers, as well as a variety of butterflies and insects. The SandLife project has benefited both flora and fauna, such as the rare field lark. The grey-brown bird blends in well with the sandy open landscape where it thrives. Parts of the area are classified as sand steppe, a nature type that is currently on the verge of disappearing in northern Europe.

Experience the eel coast with fishing shed and outdoor museum

The coast between Kivik and Åhus is characterized by the fishing that has been carried out here since the Stone Age. Preserved eel huts bear witness to centuries of eel fishing in the area. The sheds were often built with one gable facing the sea, the other sunk into the embankment. Fishing has also played a central role for the fishing village of Vitemölla in the southern part of the area. Take in local history by looking into the open-air museum, as well as the old half-timbered house Lindgrens länga and Stenörens ålobod, which has mini-exhibitions, photos and old fishing gear. These two outdoor museums are owned by us at Stiftelsen Skånska Landskap and run by Haväng's museum association.

See Stone Age tombs and ancient remains

North of the Vitemölla hiking area, the well-known Havängsdösen impresses, a stone chamber tomb from the Neolithic age, located in the middle of the rolling hills. Did you know that the tomb was completely hidden in the sand until 1843 when a storm blew the sand away? South of Klammersbäck there is also Höga stenar, which is a burial ground of 17 raised stones that are not so high, but still impressive (see location on the map). Remains of the Stone Age village of Maletofta can be found in the meadow in the western part of Klammersbäck. You can reach this place most easily via route 9 and exit Havängs sommarby where our parking is.

Rainforest-like deciduous forest down in stream furrows

In the moist and leafy stream ravines in Klammersbäck and by Verkeån, the forest is dense and feels almost exotic. Here you can come across most of the Swedish frog species, such as long-legged frog, stink toad and the rarer tree frog. With a bit of luck, you may catch sight of a blue shimmering kingfisher flying away along the water. In the coastal forest, the rare summer goldfinch thrives and here you can also see larks, kestrels and buzzards.
